How long is the yolo causeway

We were entertained at Hotel Sacramento. O Russell and myself spoke from balcony. The program for the four day celebration began on Thursday, May 11 with concerts and athletic programs in Sacramento. The festivities ended on Sunday with athletic programs and bicycle races at the State Fairgrounds. The image below, a postcard of the Yolo Causeway, is from circa The Great Yolo Basin Trestle, bridges three miles of marsh lands and unites the east and west sides of Sacramento Valley.

The Yolo Basin, a vast marshy district extends from a point 15 miles north of Marysville, south for a distance of over miles. Later, the causeway became a part of US Highways 40 and 99W. It also included a drawspan for barges that sometimes needed to use the bypass. The current causeway was built in and renamed the "Blecher-Freeman Memorial Causeway" after two California Highway Patrol officers who were shot to death in by an armed felon after a highway stop near the causeway.

The causeway is composed of two bridges connected by an earth fill segment. The easternmost of the two bridges is the longer of the two and traffic reporters will sometimes refer to the two structures as the "long bridge" and the "short bridge". Should flooding ever result in a massive evacuation from either side of the causeway, be forewarned that Yolo County has a contractor ready to send forklifts to both sides of the causeway to keep traffic flowing.

Their sole mission is to lift up any stalled car and drop it off Interstate 80 into the waters below. Before the causeway was constructed and the Yolo Bypass was simply a natural seasonal basin, it was nearly impossible to travel between Sacramento and the Bay Area However, the wooden road was still subject to extreme flooding in some years and it ended up being more trouble than it was worth. The Plankroad was eventually replaced by the Tule Jake Road , hardly an improvement since it was often only usable in the summer months.

Railroads were built through the Yolo Basin some years later. If you head to Sacramento from Woodland , you can still drive some of these old roads that parallel the raised railroad tracks during the dry months. The land around the causeway was flooded in early People zip over the causeway every day in their daily commute in and out of Davis. Log in. Register for free!
