Engine designs and materials along with motor oil chemistry have made massive strides in the last 15 years, so engine wear has never been lower. The 5W grade is rapidly being supplanted in new cars by 5W and 0W By the end of this decade, a new vehicle specifying 5W will be a rarity.

Again, the lower the number, the thinner the oil is and easier it flows around your engine. An oil that has a 20 after the W flows easier and faster than an oil with a grade that ends in 30, 40, 50, etc.

To make a 0W, high quality base oils and strong additives are needed. The base oils must be able to protect and flow at very low temperatures. And the additives must be thin enough to move well but still protect these newer advanced engines. Currently, 5W and 5W are the most popular grades in the motor oil market. But in recent years, 0W is the fastest growing grade and is in position to be the most common grade recommended by auto manufacturers in the coming years.

The reason for this is due to the technical advancements of automobile engines. Recent years have seen developments such as hybrid vehicles, cylinder deactivation, stop-start engines, direct injection GDI and turbochargers.

The only exception is SAE 0W motor oils. Within the past decade, original equipment manufacturers OEMs have been tasked to meet the legislated regulations for better fuel economy and lowered emissions OEMs have made huge strides by reducing engine size and maintain horsepower performance through the introduction of smaller Turbocharged Gasoline Direct Injection engines TGDI and operating on thinner viscosity grades.

The benefits of using the correct 0W grade oil for your vehicle are faster flow at start-up to reach critical engine parts, faster engine warm up and delivers better fuel economy as compared to higher viscosity grade oils.

That value is the one most critical aspect to match when selecting a motor oil. The 0W or 5W refers to the pumpability in cold temperatures. Therefore, a 0W would flow more easily than a 5W and could be an acceptable substitute. For example, if your car calls for SAE 5W motor oil you can use SAE 0W motor oil because the second number 20 is the most crucial number and your engine is designed to take into account the viscosity of the motor oil at engine operating conditions.

Leaks are not typically caused by the motor oil. If your engine is experiencing oil leaks, it is likely due to engine wear and cracked or worn seals on older vehicles.
