Matt devoted 18 years to this project, one that began with combing early manuscripts and rare printed volumes, first to establish a proper Aramaic text since there is no single canonical version of the Zohar. This formed the basis of his highly readable and often soaringly poetic translation into English, which takes into account the latest Zohar scholarship. Although the Zohar purports to be a record of conversations among rabbis wandering the Galilee in the second century, scholars following Gershom Scholem, the founder of modern research in this field now believe it was composed in lateth-century Spain.

It weaves together tales of these rabbis and their adventures with a remarkable series of homilies they share with one another, woven around biblical verses. Ingeniously reinterpreting every word of the ancient scriptures, they create a new symbolic language that offers remarkable depth and spiritual resonance to every aspect of the Jewish tradition. The Sabbath, for the Zohar, is no longer just a day of rest, but is transformed into the mysterious bride of God, and Jews at the dinner table join the host of angels accompanying her to her wedding feast.

Abraham is no longer just the first of the patriarchs, but the human embodiment of divine love, a boundless stream of compassion that flows into the world and renews its life. Torah is not just the commanded word of God, but a verbal incarnation of divinity that comes alive in the hearts and minds of those who engage with it.

This may be compared to a beloved maiden, beautiful in form and appearance, concealed secretly in her palace. She has a secret lover unknown to anyone—except to her, concealedly.

Out of the love that he feels for her, this lover passes by her gate constantly, lifting his eyes to every side. Knowing that her lover is constantly circling her gate … she opens a little window in that secret palace … reveals her face to her lover, and quickly withdraws, concealing herself.

None of those near the lover sees or notices, only the lover, and his inner being and heart and soul follow her. Torah knows that one who is wise of heart circles her gate every day. What does she do?

She reveals her face to him from the palace, and beckons him with a hint. The reader who hears echoes of the Spanish romancero in the background will not be completely wrong.

Your current browser may not support copying via this button. The Zohar entered the Jewish canon alongside the Talmud and the books of the Bible in fact, more manuscripts of the Zohar have come down to us than of the Talmud, which indicates its circulation and centrality in the pre-print age.

Remarkably, to this day, no comprehensive commentary on the Zohar has been written from the standpoint of its pshat, its literal meaning, which would provide a fundamental understanding of the text. Nor has academic study of the Zohar engendered as yet a continuous commentary covering the entire work, but rather, at best, only selected passages. A third and final lock concerns the version of the text. At least for the reader who wishes to undertake a critical perusal of the Zohar, the truth is that we do not have one authorized version of this canonical work.

The vast inventory of Zohar manuscripts shows that every page and every line of the book is rife with various alternative wordings, yet no scientific edition of the entire Zohar has yet been published. The critical reader of the Zohar must always ask himself what kind of Zohar he is reading. Its 12 volumes constitute a monumental enterprise that sets out to cope with the three hurdles mentioned above, which separate the contemporary reader from the Zohar.

Over two decades of painstaking labor, Prof. Daniel Matt, who headed the project, translated the Zohar, line by line, into English. Three of the volumes, which contain discrete Zoharic texts, were translated and annotated by Joel Hecker and Nathan Wolski.

For this edition, a number of versions were scanned in their entirety; from them, Matt and his colleagues derived an eclectic rendering that on each occasion chooses the version that appears most accurate. This is not a critical edition as such a project of gargantuan scale.

But this version of the Aramaic original, which has been uploaded in its entirety to the website of Stanford University Press, might serve as a tool in the hands of teachers and students of the Zohar. The Pritzker Edition thus serves up the Zohar lucidly and clearly for the reader of English. The body of the work consists of an elucidated text of the Zohar, with its homilies and the verses quoted in it, translated into beautiful, fluent English, and at the bottom of the page footnotes containing commentary, expansion and enriching references.

Here, for example, is a sentence on the weekly Torah portion of Vayechi Zohar 1: b; Vol 3, p. Some earlier commentators assumed that hamra here is a mule hamor in Hebrew , because of the context of walking and the reference to the elderly man riding, and took it to mean that the boy was leading the animal.

Matt refers the reader to these stories as well as to additional translations, to other parallel cases in the Zohar and to elucidations of this term by commentators and scholars. As we see, the new edition of the Zohar affords us a precise wording of the sentence and its clear translation, together with enlightening, enriching annotations.
